Happy Halloween!

I know this is a little late, but I wanted to get these pictures put up before Thanksgiving got here! I've been meaning to upload more to Facebook, but between having computer issues and running around like a chicken with its head cut off, it hasn't happened yet! Halloween marked one year since we closed on our house! Since we obviously couldn't pass out candy last year with having just closed, I was looking forward to passing it out this year! We dressed Eli up as a little ghost, ate chili, watched Halloween movies, and passed out candy to all our trick-or-treaters. I'm guessing we had roughly 50-60 kids come by. I was especially excited that one kid dressed up as Johnny from the book The Outsiders, mostly because we just finished reading it at school! Mason's dad and step-mom also came over for a little while to see Eli dressed up. Though Eli didn't care, it was fun to hang out together!

As always, we have been staying busy. Our district had conferences this past Thursday and Friday, so it was nice to get those out of the way and have a four day weekend to enjoy. Mason was very excited because it's opening weekend for rifle season. He is currently in Bethany as I write this, with his buddy, brother-in-law, and cousin. He just text to inform me that he has shot two does and is in the process of looking for one of them. Here's hoping he can find it!! Mason's mom and step-dad came down for the weekend, so Eli and I spent some time with them and did some shopping. We went to the gift shop at Sybill's in St. James, and Shelly and I were in hog heaven! They had so much cute Christmas stuff! I'll definitely have to make a trip over there again in the near future. We also did some antique shopping and just relaxed. We also had some excitement! Mr. Eli decided to not only roll from his tummy to his back, but he also laughed! Mason was pretty bummed that he missed it, but it was sure neat to witness! He's getting so big and will be four months old tomorrow; time is sure flying!

I should be cleaning, but I'm going to spend the rest of the day just lounging with Eli. Since I don't have school tomorrow I figured that laying in our pjs and doing nothing would be okay for one day! Plus, it's raining out, and that's the best way to spend rainy days! I hope everyone has had an enjoyable weekend and lets not forget to honor our veterans!! :)

The Pumpkin Patch

A couple of weeks ago we took Eli to the pumpkin patch for the first time! Granted, he could not have cared less, but we had a good time! There's a really nice one here in Rolla called Pete's Pumpkin Patch and they have a lot of neat stuff for kids-- animals, a cornbox to play in, inflatable bouncy houses, a train, stacks of hay to climb on, and of course a hayride out to the pumpkin patch itself. He'll be a lot more excited about it next year obviously, but we just couldn't resist! Here are some pictures from our afternoon together:

Once Halloween actually gets here I'll definitely post some more pictures of him, not only with his carved pumpkin, but in his Halloween costume as well!

Other than that, we've been very busy with school, and Mason with school and class! Despite our hectic schedule, it's nice to be in a set routine finally, and I've really enjoyed being back to school. It's been a great start so far-- good team, good kids (for the most part!), and Eli is well taken care of so I have no worries there! And I'm finally about caught up from being on maternity leave!

Mason has done some hunting, and has managed to get one deer so far! Yay! He took a trip to Bethany with his buddy Devan to not only bow hunt, but to also prepare for rifle season. Each year Mason, his cousin, his buddy Billy, and sometimes his brother-in-law Greg go up for opening weekend and hunt. I have a love-hate relationship with deer season. I love it because Mason really enjoys it and it typically results in us having a new stash of deer meat. But I hate it because the man is obsessed! I'm one more hunting show away from poking my eyeballs out! Okay, it's not that bad, but I do sit through a lot of hunting shows..

This weekend Tabitha, Greg, and Carson are coming down and staying with us for David's birthday (Mason and Tabitha's dad). We're definitely looking forward to it because we don't get to spend that much time with them since they live up by St. Joseph as well. And then on Sunday, Mason, Eli, and I are going to try out a new church. Many of you already know that when we tried to get Eli baptized, the priest (who we've never met-- he is new to the parish) refused to do so even though we've been regular members there for nearly two and a half years. According to him we were not tithing correctly (using the envelopes so they knew what we were giving) and in general, were not living the Christian lifestyle like we should (again, he has never met us). There was a lot more that went on than that but that's the gist of it and it definitely rubbed us the wrong way. We (mostly myself) have really been struggling with what to do. It has basically made me question everything about my beliefs. After everything happened I joined the Catholic church in St. Robert, but found that I was really only going there to try to get Eli baptized, not to worship or enjoy mass like I used to. So I decided that wasn't good either. Plus, after this whole fiasco, Mason feels even stronger about not wanting to attend mass with me. He used to because he knew how important it was to me even though he had a lot of questions and wasn't very comfortable. But now he really doesn't want to, which I can understand. After some praying, soul-searching, and some conversations with Mason, we've decided we are going to try to find a church that we are both comfortable with. We want church to be something we can enjoy together, rather than feeling divided as a family. It's been a difficult decision, but right now I think it is what will be the best for us. Here's hoping my family doesn't disown me! Ha!

Well, now that I've rambled on forever, I suppose I better get off here and get some cleaning done. I've got a long ways to go before this house is ready for company! Here's hoping everyone has a fabulous end to another busy week! :)

A Heavy Heart

As the title of this post states, I am writing this with a heavy heart. My Grandma Olson, who I also considered one of my close friends, passed away yesterday morning (September 29th). At least a month ago (maybe more...I can't remember exactly) she fell in her yard and broke her left wrist and right shoulder. Because of this she had to have surgery on both and spent some time in the hospital. Once she was well enough, they sent her to Manor Care in Waterloo to provide her with therapy and help her get around again.

Though she was improving and making progress with her therapy she decided at the beginning of last week that after dialysis on Monday she was not going back. I was informed through other family members that because of this decision she could live anywhere from two days to two weeks. But each person is different. Though I understood her decision, it didn't make it any easier knowing she would not be around for a lot longer. Mason and I decided to make an unexpected trip to Iowa on Friday, which also happened to be my golden birthday (28 on the 28th...yeesh..). Mason was a little bummed because he had other plans for my birthday, but he understood and was eager to see Grandma as well. We got up to Waterloo and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening hanging out with Grandma and several other family members. Even though that was not how I initially planned on spending my birthday, I consider myself very fortunate that I had that time with her. My mom and step-dad went to get pie from across the street (since it was a last minute decision to come up they didn't get a cake), and we had a small birthday celebration in my grandma's room. She even sang happy birthday to me! I can't remember the last time I spent my birthday with my family and it was wonderful!

Anyway, Eli started getting pretty cranky so we said our goodbyes and went back to JJ and Bailey's. The next morning we were in the process of getting ready to visit her again, but we got a call that she had a seizure during breakfast and was put on oxygen. About 5-10 minutes later we received another call that she had passed away. Unfortunately, my sister Laura had to witness it, but she was at least able to spend some time with Grandma before it happened. Those of us that were up at the nursing home said some prayers with the chaplain that was there and then we went back to my grandma's house. Though it was hard being in her house without her there, it was nice to reminisce and spend time together.

As you can imagine, it was pretty rough on everyone. But I'm incredibly thankful that Mason, Eli, and I were able to get there and spend some time with her before it happened. We're back in Missouri right now, but will be heading back up to Iowa again Tuesday evening for her funeral, which is supposed to be Wednesday. So I came home, did a super quick clean, unpacked our dirty clothes, did laundry, and am trying to prepare for the couple of days I will be at school, in addition to the days I won't be at school again. My mind has definitely been on my grandma this evening. It will be incredibly hard to say goodbye as she was my go-to person for everything. But I know she's in a better place and razzing everyone up in heaven! ; ) She will be missed immensely...

Labor Day

I've been meaning to share our Labor Day weekend trip to Iowa, and Eli is currently taking a nap, so I thought now would be a good time! We were hoping to head up earlier, but because Mason had back-to-school workshops we had to wait until he got home. Since I have chosen to take some maternity leave I didn't have to attend the workshops, which didn't totally break my heart! ;) I have a handsome little man I got to hang out with instead!

Anyways, we got on the road slightly before five and were Iowa-bound! Surprisingly, we made it in almost exactly seven hours! We only had to stop twice to feed Eli, but honestly, we were ready for a break as well. And we would have gotten there much sooner, but it rained for the majority of the drive because of the hurricane, so we had to take it slow.

We ended up staying with JJ and Bailey at their new house, which is adorable! And I have to say that it was incredibly nice not having to drive all over Iowa and back again to see everyone. Instead, we stayed in Dunkerton on Saturday and everyone came to us! Eli not only got to watch his first Iowa game (they won!) but he also got to meet several family members, including great-grandparents, great aunts and uncles, and some cousins! He also got to meet some of our friends. That evening we went to the OP in Evansdale. Mason is slightly obsessed with the taco pizza they have so we had that for dinner. I do have to say, it's pretty tasty! Overall, it was wonderful getting to see everyone and we appreciate everyone who came over to visit!

After church on Sunday we went to Waterloo to visit my Grandma Olson in the hospital. For those who maybe didn't see my Facebook post, she fell and broke her left wrist and right shoulder and had to have surgery on both. Despite being in some pain, she seemed very upbeat and happy to have lots of family around. It is still going to be a long road to recovery for her, but she seems to be moving in the right direction!

Monday morning found us packing up once again. We were fortunate enough to have a beautiful drive home without any rain. And on top of that, Eli did very well - only two stops were made! We hope that he continues to enjoy long car rides since a lot of our family (especially mine) live a good distance away.

And one more quick update on Eli - at his two month appointment yesterday he weighed in at 11 pounds 1.1 ounces and is 22.8 inches long! He was a trooper and endured three shots like a champ, with only a minute or two of blood curdling wails! He is definitely a growing boy!

He has started smiling quite a bit, I just haven't been able to catch him on camera. Everytime I pull out the camera he stops. Little turd...

One Month Old

Okay, before I actually begin this post, I want to say that I 'probably' won't post every time Eli is another month older, but I can't promise that every post I make from now on won't be entirely about him! You have been warned! ;)

As you can see, Eli is already one month old. Actually, one month and three days, and I can't believe how quickly it is going! Anyone who is a parent always says how quickly the time goes and they aren't kidding! Mason and I are sure enjoying every minute of it, and it makes me sad to think about taking him to daycare. Luckily, I still have a little over a month before I will have to do so, which is wonderful!

Elias seems to be adjusting to life outside the womb pretty well. He hasn't mastered the whole "we sleep at night" thing, but I guess for a one month old he's doing pretty good! ;) He usually sleeps for three to four hours at a time before he's ready to eat. One night he actually slept for five. However, I didn't get to enjoy it because I kept waking up to make sure he was breathing since he did not wake up to eat. He tends to be a noisy sleeper so when he actually gets quiet we wonder what's going on! He also moves all the time when he sleeps so we have been swaddling him so he doesn't wake himself up. Swaddlers are one of the Best. Inventions. Ever. At least we think so!

As I mentioned in my previous post, when Eli was first born, he had a touch of jaundice. Because of that, his doctor wanted to see him sooner than normal. When we took him in for the first time his weight had dropped to 6 pounds 15 ounces, and his jaundice levels had peaked. The doctor prescribed a biliblanket for him and he had to lay on that 24/7 until his levels dropped. By the following Friday (July 20th) when we took him in, he was back up to 7 pounds 2 ounces, and his skin looked so much better that the doctor didn't even make us go get his levels checked again.

Shortly after that our little munchkin got a clogged tear duct in his left eye. I, of course, had no idea what it was, so I called the on-call nurse (again) and they prescribed him some ointment. Though Eli wasn't at all phased by how bad his eye looked, I was a wreck. If he would have had any idea what was going on he would have thought his mama was nuts! ;)

Aside from that, he has been doing fabulous, and we love having him here. He's a lot more alert now, and he has started grinning a lot more, though he doesn't realize he's doing it. We love trying to get him to smile! We've also had a lot of visitors, but the traffic flow has finally calmed down a little. Since Mason is going to be starting classes again next week and school will be starting again soon, I'm kind of glad we are getting to spend so much time just the three of us. Because once everything gets going again it will be hard to get that time together. We will, however, be making a trip to Iowa over Labor Day weekend to meet some more people. So hopefully Eli will enjoy the long car ride!

That's been about it on our end. Our days basically consist of feeding, wiping butt, and cuddling our little guy. It's definitely the best time I've spent! : )

Elias Arlan Heavin

We can hardly believe it but our little man is finally here! Eli made his grand arrival exactly three weeks before he was due.

I went in for my regular prenatal appointment on Wednesday (July 11th). While there it was discovered that I was already 2 centimeters dilated and 50% effaced, and I was also showing a lot of the signs for preeclampsia. I gained ten pounds in a week (which is just insane), had some edema, there was protein in my urine, my blood pressure was higher than normal, and the doctor said my face was looking puffy around my eyes and nose. He was very concerned and immediately sent me down to the lab for blood work. When I came back he had decided that rather than have me do the 24-hour urine analysis, he wanted me to go directly to labor and delivery at the hospital to be induced. It was a bit of a shock since Mason and I were still prepared to wait a few more weeks before the baby came.

I explained what was going on to Mason and we got everything together to head to the hospital. Once we got there and were shown to our room, I was immediately given an IV and hooked up to a magnesium drip. My doctor said that women with preeclampsia are more prone to having seizures and the magnesium helps to prevent that from happening. The next morning around 6:30, they started me on pitocin to get my contractions going. I was already having some mild ones the night before, but nothing too crazy. The doctor planned to come back to break my waters around noon, but they actually broke on their own around 10:40 that morning. The doctor and several nurses said that they believed I would have delivered in a day or two anyway since I was progressing so quickly. Here is the last pregnant picture of me at exactly 37 weeks. And the doctor was definitely right, my face was looking rather puffy!!

Around 4:30 I was checked again, and at that point I was ready to go! I was very fortunate and only ended up pushing for about an hour and a half and little Eli was here. He made his grand entrance at 6:06 p.m. He weighed in at 7 pounds 10 ounces and was 19 and a half inches long, which was rather shocking since he was three weeks early. At that point I was very thankful he didn't go full term. He would have been a whopper!

This is our first family picture right after Eli was born on July 12th. Everything went very smoothly and Mason helped to trim the umbilical cord. From there, we were brought back to our room to spend some time with Eli and get to know him. For the most part, he's a very mild-mannered baby, but he hates to be changed and undressed, and will get VERY worked up. He definitely has a set of lungs! He's been a very good eater as well, which is good because he does have a touch of jaundice. The doctors weren't too concerned, but they just wanted to make sure that we keep an eye on it.

After three days in the hospital we were very eager to get home. We got home on Saturday around 4-4:30 and spent the rest of the evening holding and loving on Eli. He definitely gave us a run for our money his first night here at home. He ate great but then when we would lay him back down, he would get super fussy. We tried everything short of standing on our heads, but the little guy just wanted to be cuddled and held. It was the only thing that would make him sleep. So needless to say, we've been rather exhausted today! But it has definitely been worth it, and we are so happy and thankful that Eli is finally here!

Anniversary Weekend

Tomorrow is officially our one year anniversary, but we decided that we would go to St. Louis this weekend to celebrate. We also combined it as a pre-baby vacation! We stayed at a bed and breakfast called the Cheshire Inn. It was a neat place, but I don't know that we would stay there again. It was okay though because we spent most of our time outside the hotel. We got to St. Louis Friday evening and just hung out and ordered in pizza from Imos-- so yummy! Saturday morning we got up and spent a few hours at the St. Louis Zoo. We were definitely glad we went first thing in the morning because it got hot very quickly, plus there were a TON of people there! I, unfortunately, didn't plan very well with the attire I chose. Apparently the flip flops I decided to wear didn't like me and gave me some really annoying blisters, causing us to have to go back to the hotel so I could change prior to going shopping! Here are just a few pictures of the animals. I love zoos!!

Like I said, after the zoo, we decided to do some serious damage to our bank account and go shopping. We picked up a few things for Mason and A LOT of clothes for Baby H. He/she will be set for clothes for a bit (I think..). Mason also surprised me by taking me to Kay's and buying me a ring for our anniversary! I then felt terrible because I only bought him an $8.00 DVD (Couple's Retreat-- the movie we saw on our first date) per our agreement that our trip would count as our gift to one another. He justified it by saying that I bought him a bike and gun safe. I agreed that it was okay at that point! : )

We later went back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. We looked up this place called Charlie Gittos before we even went to St. Louis, which is a really nice Italian restaurant on the hill. The food was excellent, and our server even brought us a complimentary dessert for our anniversary! So yummy! This is us after our fabulous dinner!

Today we went shopping at a couple more places (and did some more damage to our bank account) prior to coming home to pick up Gussy. Mason even let me drive his new truck to go pick him up! I think I mentioned in a previous blog that he was fixing up a truck to replace the Nissan. His buddy Bill bought a 1996 GMC Sierra and offered to sell it to Mason for what he bought it for, mostly because it needed a new motor put in. So with a great deal of help from Bill (Mason's best friend who happens to be a mechanic), they found a motor and put the truck back together again. Mason was kind of bummed to say goodbye to the Nissan, but he's very excited to have a "big" truck again!

That was our weekend in a nutshell and we had a great time! We consider ourselves very lucky that we were able to spend that time together prior to Baby Heavin's arrival in T-minus 5ish weeks (hopefully). We plan on spending the rest of the evening relaxing and not doing much of anything. As you can see from the picture below Gus is very happy to have us back home as well!!

My Weekend in Iowa....

....was fabulous!! I got up to Iowa on Friday evening and got to spend some time with my brother and his fiance Bailey, which included dinner at Texas Roadhouse- YUM! JJ was also very adamant that we were going to have a bonfire at my dad's house, so several of us met up at my dad's and had one. It was great to see a lot of people that I have not seen in awhile. Unfortunately, since my normal bedtime ranges anywhere from 8:30 to 10:00, the whole staying up until 1:00 in the morning thing was a slight struggle. So...I went and napped in JJ's car for awhile! : )

On Saturday I went to visit my Grandma Olson for a couple of hours before my baby shower. She had another stroke last week and was in the hospital up until Friday. It was good to see her up and about and she seemed to be in pretty good spirits. After visiting I headed over to my Grandma Steffen's where my shower was being hosted by my aunt Sara and my cousin Amy (I know there were others who helped as well). Everyone made the day so special and it was so cute! I got to see several college friends that I had not seen in a very long time, and I appreciated the fact that so many people traveled so far! Not only that, but everyone was just beyond generous with everything Mason and I received for Baby Heavin. We have a few things we still need to pick up, but otherwise we should be good to go!

After the shower, I had dinner with Bailey, Lindsey, and Ashley (friends from college) and enjoyed some laughs while we caught up. We then went to Ashley's in-laws for another bonfire (we like to burn things) and got to hang out with everyone again. And of course, Sunday morning I had to head back to Missouri. As much as I hated to leave, I was happy to get back home and see my handsome hubby and my cute little fur child!

Hello, Summer!!

As of Thursday afternoon at 2:30, summer officially started for Mason and I! Although this year was a bit rough at times, it's great to have another year of teaching under my belt. This was Mason's first year as a para and he really enjoyed it. It has been really nice just relaxing and not having to worry about anything these last few days. Although, we did go on a field trip to Silver Dollar City with several of my NJHS kids the Saturday after we finished school. With only a few minor set backs, it was a great day and the kids really seemed to enjoy themselves.

Thursday, however, I'll have my nose back to the grindstone with the start of summer school. Luckily, they are only half-days and I'll be finished by June 22nd, which isn't bad as far as I'm concerned! Mason will actually be going back to work with his old boss for the summer. We figured that since he still gets paid through the school it would be nice to bring in a little extra money to prepare for this little bundle that will soon be greeting us! Plus, Mason is in the process of getting a different truck. It needs a little work, but it is in significantly better shape than the Nissan. That poor truck has seen much better days..

There's been so much going on lately that I'm pretty sure I've forgotten a lot of it. The one major thing I do remember is that my little sister, Laura, has officially graduated high school! Mason was unable to make the trip to Iowa with me because his cousin got married that same weekend and we wanted to make sure that at least one of us was at each event. Plus, I made a long weekend out of my trip and Mason didn't have any sick days left! ; ) It was a great time and it was wonderful to see everyone and spend so much time with them. I'm really excited for Laura because she earned some scholarships and will be attending my alma mater, the University of Northern Iowa, this fall! Go Panthers!! Mason also ran his second 5K, yesterday actually. They had a fun run here in Rolla on Memorial Day. Mason has been working hard to get back in shape and he decided another 5K was in order. He wasn't thrilled with his time, but he ran the whole thing which he was very happy about. The last time he had to stop because he was having a hard time with his breathing (he has asthma and allergies), so he did very well!

Otherwise, we've just been doing some random odds and ends around the house to try to prepare for Baby H. His/her room is pretty well ready to go and we have a massive stockpile of diapers, thanks to everyone's generosity! I even did my first couple loads of baby clothes yesterday, which was weird. I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose all the baby socks before he/she even arrives! I'm already going to the doctor every two weeks, so it won't be much longer now! I am also excited to report that I do not have gestational diabetes. I failed my one-hour test, so I had to go in for the lovely three-hour where they take your blood four times instead of just once! It definitely wasn't the most pleasant thing in the world for someone who gets light-headed when they take my blood, but I survived, and had a good outcome! So no complaints here!

We are also looking forward to the end of June, when we will celebrate our one year anniversary! I can't believe it's already less than a month away. I'm not exactly sure where the time went, but it definitely flew by! We decided that we are going to spend a weekend in St. Louis, have a nice dinner, and do some shopping and exploring. We've been to St. Louis several times, but considering I'll be a little over 34 weeks at that point, I didn't really want to go much further away than that. Though I'm sure I'll be a blimp, I'm very excited!!

Like I said, it's been so busy I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but those are the main highlights! I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend and had a great kickoff to the summer with friends and family!!

T-25 Days......

...until school is OUT for the summer!! But who's counting? I'm loving this amazing weather and I can't wait until I can enjoy it during the day. Granted, I'll be teaching summer school but those are only half-days so I'll still have plenty of time to do whatever in the afternoon. Being a teacher definitely has its perks! It'll be nice to spend some more time with Mason too, I suppose. ; ) Although, he'll probably be busy as well because he's going to be taking a couple of summer classes plus he's planning to work a little on the side as well.

In other news our nephew Carson officially turned ONE on the 12th! Where did the time go, seriously?! Mason and I made the trip to Camden Point (up by St. Joseph) for his first birthday party which was wonderful. He had a sock monkey-themed party that was super adorable. Everyone seemed to have a good time and Carson made out like a bandit! Here are just a few of the pictures from his party:

Mason's birthday was also this month, but on the 10th. He didn't get much since he got the gun safe, but I did buy him a movie and some new headphones so he had something to open. Not to mention the lemon meringue pie I got him from Slice of Pie (amazing!) here in Rolla. That's his absolute favorite and he seemed pretty excited about it! The Friday before we went to Matt's Steakhouse here in Rolla and had his birthday dinner. That's our birthday/anniversary restaurant so we always take full advantage and splurge when we go!!

This weekend (after Mason hunts of course..) we will be heading up to St. Louis for the day to register for baby stuff and just do some general baby shopping. I can't wait!! We've been picking up a few things here and there and are getting quite a stash together! In fact, I managed to find a used bumbo seat and tray for only $20 and it hardly looks used....I love a good deal! Everything is going well, and my last appointment happened to land on Mason's birthday. And it was there that I found out I had gained 6 more pounds...oops! ;) The doctor didn't seem too worried about it so I'm not going to either! I figure I'll get back on track after the baby comes so I may as well enjoy it while I can! I am 25 weeks today and I can't believe how quickly it is going! Now if only this kid would lay off my bladder....there are times where I'm pretty sure that he/she is trying to escape alien-style!

25 weeks

Well, I'm off to grade some papers before I lose all the motivation I have. I've done the dishes and now have written this blog so I suppose I better stop procrastinating. Have a good night, all!!
